If you guys can’t tell I have a massive boner for armor
A breakdown of medieval armor, since a lot of pieces are required to create a full suit.
I felt like this post was missing some pieces. Along with the vambrace is the polyn which is the elbow armor and the rerebrace which is the armor for the upper arm, usually the rerebrace and polyn are connected and become connected with the vambrace to create full arm protection. The same applies with the cuisses (upper leg) and the couter(knee). Another very important piece that is not armor itself is the gambeson which was made to absorb impact for whenever you were struck with blunt weapons as well as not having the metal right on top of your skin so that it didn’t pinch. Another big thing involving the cuirass(breastplate and backplate together) is that the flair on the bottom was mainly created to distribute weight over the waist instead of your back to help the armor be more comfortable, and to not hurt you as much. There are also many variations of each piece especially helmets and things like bevors which is a type of gorget that goes with a sallet helm, standard which is basically chainmail for your neck instead of a gorget, and other small pieces like rondels which were armpit armor. Also just to throw this out there historical plate armor only weighed 40-60lbs for a full suit and 12-16lbs for a full shirt of chainmail.
